A Nature Walk through Taylor Creek

Just below the DVP, the Taylor Creek Park follows the Don River; a place I would often visit as a child. My friends and I would bike ride through the trails and just explore for hours, with great enthusiasm. For those here in Toronto, this is a wonderful spot that I highly recommend. It is a true gem in our busy city.

I love bringing my Pack here often, and going on long peaceful walks. Our outings, in general, range from 3-4 hours, depending where we go.  They sniff, see and listen to the wildlife that surrounds them as they follow their (human) pack leader.

Here's a clip of what our nature walks are like. The sights and sounds are a wonderful way for the dogs, and us humans, to really escape from the city and enjoy what mother nature has created.

The nature walk is one of my favourite ways of living in the now and riding the wave of balance.

Look who's still here

Just a quick update to share with you. Joker's stay has been extended! We're thrilled that he has some extra time to hang ot with The Pack.

The rehabilitation program is complete, but he'll be boarding with us as his family prepares for a move. It's better for his continued growth that he stays in a balanced atmosphere until all the chaos and stress of moving is complete. His owners' can't wait to be with him again; however they want to be assured that they are prepared and fully committed to Joker upon his return.

Joker: Calm + Submissive

People, in general, were often a trigger for Joker's aggressive outbursts. His owners' were very concerned about him around children, in particular.

When I'm working with a dogs, I bring them nearly everywhere I go, including family functions. This allows me to work though real life scenarios.

Last weekend was the perfect opportunity for him to face a situation that would normally have made him uneasy. Look at Joker's body language-- he's relaxed and comfortable in the situation. It was quite natural for him to ease into the situation.

In the video, you can see Joker being a part of the backyard gathering, even while a small child walks by him. Our adolescent Doberman, is actually acting as support for Joker. She understands the behaviour and state of mind that is expected in these situations.

As you know, children can create excitement. There is a moment where Joker becomes curious, and is firmly reminded to go back to submission. By controlling Joker's level of excitement (maintaining a submissive state of mind), he is able to become part of a social setting.

Joker: Play + Bonding

Joker is now into week three. The last two weeks have consisted of more activities and challenges. I've mentioned previously, that having The Pack around has been key in Joker's recovery -- especially being with my two dogs on a regular basis.

Becoming part of a pack consists of plenty of bonding time, but Joker missed out on this during an important part of his adolescence. You'll notice, in the video, that my girls provide this much needed bonding. They have developed a wonderful relationship, especially Joker and Bunny. They're close in age and have very similar energy levels.

A Day in the Life: Joker + The Pack

On Friday we took a trip to one of my favourite spots, Cherry Beach. We were able to have Melissa come along and take some great shots of Joker and The Pack, running around, just being dogs.

a round of treats for everyone

My girls, hanging out with me for a bit

I think it was twin day, cause we were seeing doubles all over the place. It was fun to see them interact with their fellow breed mates.

meeting some other k9's along the way
